LOS ANGELES, March 13 (Xinhua) -- A new study showed that the drivers in western U.S. city of Los Angeles were ranked No. 1 in the country for aggressive driving.

According to the study published Tuesday by the fuel-saving app GasBuddy, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Sacramento, the top three cities on the list, are 21 percent more aggressive than the average driver in the United States, topping the list of U.S. cities with most gas-guzzling drivers on the road.

GasBuddy, the smartphone app connecting drivers with their Perfect Pit Stop, revealed four of the top 10 cities with the most aggressive drivers are in California, including Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego.

The study showed that Los Angeles consistently tops the list of having some of the most expensive gas prices in the nation.

Honking, squeaking brakes and bumper-to-bumper traffic are common problems in many of America's congested cities. Frustrated drivers can get agitated quickly, and their aggressive driving habits like speeding, rapid acceleration and braking can lower gas mileage by as much as 40 percent, costing them as much as 477 U.S. dollars per year in additional fuel consumption, according to the study.

"Frustration while driving in densely populated cities with high levels of congestion leads motorists to drive more aggressively and with more urgency. Interestingly, these are areas that typically see some of the highest gas prices in their respective states," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

GasBuddy also found that the most aggressive day on the road in the United States is Friday while Wednesday is the least aggressive day on the road.
