PYONGYANG, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has given a high-profile seeing off ceremony for an art troupe to perform in South Korea during the PyeongChang Olympics, said official media Tuesday.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, and other senior officials saw off the troupe here on Monday, official newspaper Rodong Sinmum reported.

Kim Yo Jong, 31, was last year promoted to the position of a member of the political bureau of the ruling Worker's Party of Korea.

The troupe is led by Kwon Hyok Bong, a department director of the Ministry of Culture, and Hyon Song Wol, head of the Samjiyon Orchestra. It is due to give "congratulatory performance" in Seoul and elsewhere for the Winter Olympics, according to local media.

The art troupe was going to the eastern port city Wonsan by train before boarding cruise liner "Mangyongbong-92" for the south.

The situation at the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula remains highly volatile due to the military confrontation between the DPRK and the United States.

The DPRK and South Korea are cooperating to make sure the PyeongChang Olympics will be a success and will contribute to promoting the cultural prestige of the Korean nation.

The two sides have also set up a joint women's ice hockey team and will collaborate in skate dancing, skiing, and traditional sports demonstration, while a high-level delegation led by Kim Jong Nam, president of DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, will attend the opening ceremony of the games

The two teams from the north and south will again enter the stadium together in 12 years, holding a white and blue flag symbolizing national reunification rather than their respective national flags.

The 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games will take place in PyeongChang, eastern South Korea, on Feb. 9-25.
