ALMATY, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Firefighters have been fighting a deep-seated fire at a municipal solid waste landfill in Kazakhstan's Almaty Region for two days, the country's Ministry of Emergency Situations said Tuesday.
According to the official news agency Kazinform, smoldering blazes continue at a depth of up to 10 meters in some places. To eliminate the flames, inert materials are being filled in, followed by soil compaction.
Approximately 150 personnel and over 70 units of equipment are involved in firefighting efforts, said the report.
The ministry assured that the situation is under control and there is no threat of the fire spreading to nearby areas. An operational headquarters has been set up at the site. ■
