LONDON, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he is ready to hand Alexander Isak his debut in Wednesday's Champions League group match against Atletico Madrid.
Isak, who joined from Newcastle on deadline day for a British-record 125 million pounds, is expected to feature at Anfield after missing Sunday's 1-0 win at Burnley due to a lack of match fitness.
The 25-year-old striker had trained alone at Newcastle to push through the transfer and is still regaining sharpness after missing preseason. His only appearance this season was an 18-minute substitute outing for Sweden in a 2-0 defeat to Kosovo.
Slot confirmed Isak will be included but said he is not ready for a full match.
"He is part of the squad, so it's already a Champions League game to look forward to, but if people look forward to his playing time, that could mean that could happen tomorrow as well," Slot said.
"So the moment he is fit, match fit, [he] can play 90, and then the next step is playing three times in a week 90 minutes.
"And that is what he has to do; scoring goals and doing special things in attack is something he will 100% do. The main challenge he has is to become so fit that he's first of all ready to do what he did last season," he added. ■
