LJUBLJANA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia's capital Ljubljana and several other cities have launched activities to promote sustainable transport during European Mobility Week, which began Tuesday.
Ljubljana will open a Park of Safe Mobility in the city's southwest, featuring a large traffic training polygon and interactive learning stations to teach children and adults about road safety. The city will also deploy eight hydrogen-powered buses to replace older vehicles, a step toward its goal of carbon neutrality by 2030 and improved air quality.
As part of its climate adaptation strategy, Ljubljana will add 15 planted roofs to bus stations, expanding its "green roof" program to 80 sites and creating about 300 square meters of new greenery. These vegetated roofs help cool urban areas, absorb rainwater, and enhance air quality.
The week's events will culminate in a Car-Free Day next Monday, with free bus rides and free parking on the outskirts. Slovenia's second-largest city, Maribor, will mark the day by introducing new electric buses and offering free public transport. Other towns are running their own programs to encourage low-emission travel.
Launched by the European Commission in 2002, European Mobility Week is held annually across the EU to promote sustainable, inclusive transport. This year's theme is "Mobility for Everyone." ■
